UEFA Regions Preparatory Match

Central & West Select 4 South & West Select 1

@ Ravencraig Sports Complex on Sunday, 19th January 2014

The venue was changed to indoors at Ravencraig to ensure the game would go ahead given the inclement weather and its also worth noting that all the players request to attend turned up for the match along with a large appreciative support from their various clubs and families.

As for the game it started in great style with the South & West Select side ahead from the kick-off. A quick thrust forward ended with a wicked drive from Greig Rankin, the tall Galston United AFC striker. This had the effect of stirring up the Central & West Select side into some positive action that was eventually rewarded in the 20th minute.

Having no luck inside the 18-yards box Alec Cleary decided to show his forwards the way with a cracking shot from distance through a crowded area and into the net.

Eight minutes later the Central & West Select side in the blue kit extended their lead when Michael Mullen headed into the roof of the net, the splendid cross coming courtesy of the Bannockburn AFC midfield player Fotheringham.

The South & West, resplendent in Red reacted to the set back with some neat football but Rankin and Liam Steel upfront were well marshaled by their stout opponents. So play zipped along and just before the break David McKay quick reaction found the target with a shot that was deflected passed Scott Urquhart and into the back of the net.

At the break the management teams introduced the players off the bench but the game remained in lively mode but little goalmouth action till late in the game. Andrew McGilvery had a good save at the feet of McKay as he was about to pull the trigger but in the closing minutes of the game the Central & West Select would record a fourth goal following a corner kick. McGilvery misjudged the flight and left Niall McLure jumping high to convert with a powerful header.

After the game both managers were more than happy with the players attitude and individual performance and we can now wait for the next qualification fixture on the road to Slovenia.
