The Only Sport Scottish Amateur Cup
The Scottish Amateur Cup—organised by the Scottish Amateur Football Association (SAFA)—has a rich history as the premier national competition for amateur clubs in Scotland. Founded after the SAFA was established in 1909 to promote non-professional football, the cup was first contested in 1910 when the SAFA secured a challenge trophy from the Scottish Football Association.
The inaugural winners were John Neilson Institution FP AFC, who defeated Paisley Academicals 2–0 at Love Street in April 1910. Since then, the tournament has grown significantly—by the mid-20th century the number of entries had grown dramatically, reflecting the wide appeal and organisation of amateur football across Scotland.
In more recent years the Cup continues to provide amateur sides the opportunity to play high-profile finals (such as at the national stadium) and to bear the honour of lifting a national trophy.
