Lothian & Edinburgh’s Tollcross Thistle overcame the challenge of Eastfield, from the Central Scottish AFL, in the long-awaited semi-final of the 2019-2020 Only Sport Scottish Amateur Cup. The Covid-delayed match saw Tollcross identified as the first of the finalists for what will be the 100th running of the Scottish Amateur Cup.

Played at the home of Hamilton Accies, the game was settled by two second half goals. Richie Wilkes set Tollcross on the road to Hampden in the 52nd minute with a well-taken back post header. Scott Millar sealed the win in the 79th minute with a crisp low drive from just inside the area.

Tollcross edged the first half. Mikey Yuill missed the half’s best opportunity, driving wide after being sent through one-on-one on keeper, Bryn Halliwell. Eastfield were dealt a hammer blow when they were forced to replace Halliwell at half-time after the keeper was concussed when challenging for a 50-50 ball.

Both sides enjoyed a lot of good possession to keep the crowd entertained, but it was Tollcross who had the more potent attack. After twice hitting the woodwork, Wilkes latched onto a deflected cross to head home from a tight angle to give Tollcross a deserved lead. Millar secured the win, his shot threading through a crowded area to nestle home at the near post.
Tollcross now await the outcome of next Tuesday’s second semi-final between Drumchapel Amateurs, another side from the Central Scottish AFL, and Ayrshire’s Shortlees. That match will also be played at Hamilton.

The Only Sport Centenary Scottish Amateur Cup Final will be played at Hampden early in the New Year, with the date still to be confirmed.
