Mark (Sinkalou) Sinclair on the bench with Gillian
Added On:5/2/2008

Mark Sinclair is currently a player with Kirkintilloch Miners Welfare (KMW) and has been with them for 5 or 6 years now.  He's better known to most of you as Sinkalou from the SAFA Forum.  I thought he was a plumber with a nickname like that but apparently not.  Darn it, I'll need to find someone else to unclog that drain...

G: When did you first get involved in amateur football and what were you doing?

M:
Went to watch a KMW game when I was 15, they did not have enough players to play so asked me to join them. Started the game, scored 2 and never looked back! (except had a year out to play with Campsie Blackwatch).

G:
What amateur teams have you been involved in and in what capacity?

M:
Kirkintilloch Miners Welfare & Kirkintilloch Ams.

G:
Do you feel the amateur football scene has changed since you first became involved with it?

M:
Not much as ive only been in it for 5, 6 years but one thing I've noticed is that most teams tend to be full of younger players.

G:
Do you have a favourite amateur team and why is it your favourite?

M:
KMW, my local team, played for them for 90% of my amateur career.

G: What’s your most memorable moment in amateur football?

M: Probably my debut.

G:
What do you think about the quality of amateur football?

M:
Think most teams are of a high quality, although there are to many “golden oldies” hanging around that still think they have what it takes!  When it's time… it's time lads...

G:
Which team provided the best post-match hospitality? (who served the best pies?)

M: For me, Cornton did last season, they took us to a sports bar and put out trays of burgers and chips (minted) and a wee discount on the drink :o)

G:
What was the last game you watched?

M:
Drumchapel United v Redbrae… Redbrae won 2-1 I think  (Scottish Cup)

G:
What was the last game you played in?

M:
KMW 4 – 0 Stirling City

G:
If you had 3 wishes, what would you change about Scottish amateur football?

M:
Got to agree with Greig on this one. (1) The 4 bookings 2 game suspension is ridiculous basically, in comparison to the senior game 8 bookings 2 game suspension. Only the top teams play many more games than amateur teams it need to change!!!!!!

(2) Have every ground and facility modernised and updated to a very high standard!

(3) Referees to have a fitness test before being allowed to ref, as many refs I've had in the past year cant keep up with play and therefore sit in the centre circle and get many decisions wrong.

G:
What do you think about summer football?

M:
It’s a good idea in principal for the likes of the weather, but I don’t think its feasible as many players will be on hols and spending time with their family.

G:
Have you any views about the relationship of the professional game to the amateur game?

M:
Is there a relationship????

G:
What do you think the future holds for Scottish amateur football?

M:
It's on the up and can only get better in my view, get the younger ones coming through and push the golden oldies into management/retirement ;o)  Got 2 disagree with all the best players being 35-40.

G:
Have you any views on superleagues?  Do you think they are a good idea?

M:
Think there a good idea as it gets the best players in the country/area playing.

G:
What do you think about Community Hubs (NB not Community Clubs)?

M:
All for them.

G:
Have you any comments on grounds and facilities?

M:
Some of the grounds and facilities are disgraceful to say the least.

G:
Do you think there is adequate provision of development courses & funding for them?

M: More could be done on this without a doubt.

G:
What do you think about the SAFA Select team – how do you think it could be developed?

M:
Should be some system in place, every team should get watched as there could be hidden talent in every team, but if they don’t play for a "big" team they're unlikely to get noticed. I know a boy that I personally think could make it at Junior level no problem... maybe further, and is only with the team he is just now due to certain circumstances and not his ability. This player is unlikely to get noticed with the current system unless he moves to a "bigger club".

G:
Are there any other comments you would like to make?

M:
First time I have been on the bench all season… lol Cheers!!

Thanks very much for taking part in On the Bench, Mark.  Interesting interview, I'm sure the refs and 'golden oldies' will have a few things to say about this on the forum ;o)
